Today more than 2,000 spent fuel/HLW casks of GNS’ own CASTOR® and CONSTOR® types and about 9.000 MOSAIK® casks and GNS Yellow Boxes® for ILW are in use today in several countries on four continents. This makes GNS the world‘s leading supplier of shielded metal transport and storage casks and containers.
For all phases of decommissioning, GNS offers reliable solutions from defueling to dismantling and packaging of RPVs and their internals and also other primary circuit components. Advanced activation calculations facilitate efficient cut planning and packaging while keeping dose rates to personnel as low as possible. Together with its subsidiaries and sometimes in cooperation with third parties, GNS is responsible for the largest D&D projects in its home market Germany and also abroad.
For more than three decades, GNS has been responsible for the management of all the radioactive waste and the spent nuclear fuel resulting from the operation of the German NPPs ranging from LLW from everyday operation to vitrified HLW from the reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel in France and the UK.
GNS treats both solid and liquid radioactive waste and applies suitable treatment processes to ensure acceptability of the waste for interim storage and final disposal. In this context a large amount of data and information needs to be acquired, documented, stored and regularly updated. For that GNS offers comprehensive software and database solutions, e.g. for tracking operational waste or residues from decommissioning.
Its products and services comprise the design and manufacturing of casks and containers for LLW, ILW, HLW and even SMR fuel, the construction of equipment for compacting, drying and packaging of wastes as well as the operation of own treatment facilities and preparations for final disposal.
